The Iraqi oil sector is undergoing rapid transformations driven by technological advancements, with artificial intelligence emerging as an effective tool to enhance operational efficiency and achieve sustainable development goals. Given that the Iraqi Ministry of Oil and the Oil Products Distribution Company represent two fundamental pillars in managing the country’s oil wealth, integrating artificial intelligence into their operational and administrative systems is a necessary step to keep pace with global changes. This research highlights the role of artificial intelligence in achieving sustainable development within these two institutions from a legal perspective, by analyzing the current Iraqi legislative frameworks and assessing their adequacy in regulating the use of such technologies. The study also addresses legislative gaps and proposes legal solutions to ensure the responsible and effective implementation of smart technologies in the oil sector.
The research concludes that the Iraqi legal framework still requires substantial updates to align with digital transformation. Adopting specific regulatory guidelines for artificial intelligence within the Ministry of Oil and its affiliated companies is a strategic necessity to balance innovation, transparency, and environmental protection.
